Head of U.S. Military in Latin America Announces Surprise Retirement

Admiral Alvin Holsey, the head of the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), has announced he will step down at the end of 2025 — nearly two years before his term was set to end. The move came as a surprise to Pentagon officials and allies across Latin America. Holsey, who took command in 2023, oversees all U.S. military operations across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Reports from Reuters and Politico suggest Holsey’s early retirement may have been prompted by growing tensions with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The two reportedly disagreed over how aggressively to pursue military operations in the Caribbean, particularly following U.S. strikes on suspected drug-trafficking boats near Venezuelan waters. While Hegseth pushed for a harder military stance, Holsey favored a more cautious and diplomatic approach.

In a statement, Hegseth praised Holsey’s “distinguished service and leadership” but did not specify why the admiral chose to retire early. The Pentagon has yet to name a successor. Holsey, one of the few Black four-star admirals in U.S. history, is respected for his emphasis on regional cooperation and for strengthening ties with Latin American allies.

His departure comes at a tense time, as Washington faces increasing criticism over its expanding military presence in the region. With rising instability and global powers like China and Russia deepening their influence in Latin America, Holsey’s exit raises fresh questions about the future direction of U.S. defense strategy in the hemisphere.
